02 Air Muscle
Place a balloon inside a cylindrical net (as is sometimes used to wrap garlic) and inflate it. The net will expand and shorten. Investigate the properties of such a ``muscle''.

  • Analytical Modeling and Experimental Validation of the Braided Pneumatic Muscle

This paper presents an extended analytical static model that does not depend on experimentally determined parameters. The proposed approach is based on Newtonian mechanics that considers the mechanical and the geometrical properties of the muscle. Distinctively, this paper includes the muscle end-fixture-diameter effect. Results from the developed model are compared with the experimental ones that have been obtained from prototypes.

  • A Review on the Development of Pneumatic Artificial Muscle Actuators: Force Model and Application

In this review, the development of the different kinds of "air muscles" are presented along with manufacturing process and the operating principle. The various force models for artificial muscle presented in the literature are broadly reviewed with the constraints.

  • Measurement and modeling of McKibben pneumatic artificial muscles

This paper reports mechanical testing the modeling results for an "air muscle". They report static and dynamic length-tension testing results and derive a linearized model of these properties for three different models.

  • Nonlinear dynamic response of pneumatic artificial muscle: A theoretical and experimental study

Here, the functions of the biceps and triceps muscles are replaced by a "air muscle" and a spring to lift the required mass. The governing nonlinear equation of motion has been derived considering the system as a single degree of freedom system. Here, the muscle force has been considered as a function of operating pressure, material properties and dimensions of the muscle. The expression for the muscle force is obtained by performing a series of experiments.

  • Studies regarding the Use of Pneumatic Muscles in Precise Positioning Systems

The paper presents the methods and results of an experimental study that highlights the behavior of a pneumatic actuator under different pressures and with different loads applied. One important challenge that occurs in the application of pneumatic muscles is the phenomenon of hysteresis, which causes a nonlinear relationship between the input–output values.
